The Elite Toastmasters Club in Kuala Lumpur proudly welcomed new members at a vibrant induction ceremony held at the prestigious Royal Lake Club Kuala Lumpur. This event not only symbolises a fresh start for newcomers but also reinforces our commitment to the core values of Toastmasters International: leadership, communication, and personal growth.
A Warm Welcome by President Ashley Yeoh
Our ceremony commenced with an inspiring address from Club President, Ashley Yeoh, who eloquently laid out the vision and mission of our club. President Yeoh emphasised the importance of our gathering in harnessing the potential of improved public speaking and self-improvement programmes, which are integral to personal and professional success in Kuala Lumpur and beyond.
Introduction of New Members
The highlight of the event was the introduction of new members, each of whom shared their reasons for joining Toastmasters and their goals for personal enhancement. This segment was a testament to the diverse backgrounds and ambitions that thrive within our club, illustrating the unique blend of experiences that enrich our community.
Insights from Mentor Lee Chen Choon
I had the opportunity to interview and hear from Lee Chen Choon, a seasoned mentor at our club. Lee shared his rewarding experience of helping others grow whilst simultaneously enhancing his own leadership and coaching skills. He approaches mentoring with a clear focus on the individual goals of the mentees, both within and outside Toastmasters, which helps in crafting a meaningful growth plan.
Lee highlighted several challenges such as balancing personal priorities and maintaining engagement, which he overcomes by consistently seeking growth opportunities for his mentees. He stressed that the essence of mentoring in Toastmasters lies in boosting confidence and fostering lifelong relationships beyond the club walls.
According to Lee, effective mentoring requires simple yet powerful skills: listening and empathy. These are crucial in adapting to different learning styles and needs. His advice to prospective mentors is straightforward: “You don’t need to be ‘somebody’ to be a mentor. You only need to be willing to give your time, as mentoring provides learning both ways.”
Networking and Fellowship
The evening concluded with a networking session, allowing members to mingle and share insights. This part of the ceremony was filled with lively discussions, laughter, and the forging of new friendships, all set against the backdrop of the beautiful Royal Lake Club Kuala Lumpur.
